  • Access/Accommodations

  • Accommodation Request for Animal in University Property

  • The approval of a particular animal requested by a resident of university housing as an emotional support animal is determined on a case-by-case basis through an interactive process involving the individual requesting the accommodation and relevant campus personnel to ensure the ESA -

    1. is necessary to provide an individual with a disability an equal opportunity to use and enjoy University Housing; and
    2. the animal will not fundamentally alter a University program, service or activity, pose an undue financial and/or administrative hardship, or pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals, or cause substantial damage to the property of other individuals or the University.

This may require the University to assess the impact of an ESA on other campus residents, patrons, or programs.

The University will accept and consider a request for an ESA at any time. The individual making the request for an ESA should complete the accommodation request process with the Disability and Accessibility Resources unit as soon as possible prior to moving into University Housing. The process includes completion of the Request for Accommodations form and submission of the Disability Verification Form and documentation verifying the need for an ESA.

If the request for an ESA is made fewer than 60 days before the individual intends to move into University Housing, the University cannot guarantee that it will be able to meet the ESA request during the initial term of occupancy. If the need for an ESA arises when the individual already resides in University Housing, the University will work with the individual but cannot guarantee that the ESA request can be met in a timely manner.

An animal may not be brought into University Housing without expressed approval from a designee of the Division of Business and Finance.

As part of the ESA approval process, a Housing representative will liaise with the Disability and Accessibility Resources unit. The disability unit staff will provide the Housing representative with the following information:

    • Whether the ESA accommodation is approved.
    • ESA species and all other relevant information (e.g., age, weight, height, housebroken status, etc.)

All requests for an ESA in University Housing are subject to an annual review.

  • Treatment (Temporary Conditions)

  • Accommodations (Temporary Conditions)

Indicated below are the types of academic adjustments/accommodations related to your temporary condition in which you might be interested. This in no way is an indication of what may ultimately be determined as approved for you, but are merely suggestions of the types of accommodations that may have worked for you in the past and/or may be available to you at WVSU in the future. For each of the following areas, check all accommodations and services options in which you are interested:

  • * In order to qualify for alternative format textbooks or course material options, the student must have a print disability - a learning, physical or visual disability that prevents a person from reading conventional printed documents or physical textbooks.

Regarding textbooks in alternative formats - even if you do not have a print disability, publishers typically provide various formats for purchase.  Many digital textbooks are available through either Redshelf (can make purchases through the WVSU bookstore) or Vitalsource.  These formats also have the advantage of typically being at a lower cost than the physical textbooks as well as typically offering resources and study tools.

Access to these platforms and formats do not need to be requested through this accommodation process.

For Redshelf, you can view availability online by clicking here OR contact the WVSU Bookstore (304) 766-3351 or bookstore@wvstateu.edu) to determine which textbooks are available through the this platform.

  • COVID Related Modifications

  • The university is committed to supporting students with COVID-19 based risk factors. The University will work with students who are vulnerable to complications from COVID-19 to ensure they have the necessary resources to participate in university life as safely as possible.

Course Schedule Adjustments - For concerns about the modality of your courses (ie, in-person, face-to-face), you should first contact your academic advisor to discuss possible adjustments to your schedule to meet your needs (ie, which courses are provided in a WEB 100 format). If scheduling adjustments do not adequately address your COVID-related concerns, then please submit this modification request.

You may submit a request for COVID-related accommodations for any of the following reasons:

    • I am experiencing prolonged symptoms due to COVID-19.
    • I have a medical condition that puts me at a higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19, as defined by the CDC.
    • I have another high-risk factor, as defined by the CDC (e.g. age, obesity, pregnancy).
    • I have a medical condition or disability not included in the CDC health factors that I believe is affected by COVID-19.

We may consider and approve COVID-19 related accommodations, including:

    • Academic flexibility during your isolation or quarantine period
    • Remote attendance/participation for on-campus attendance/participation requirements
    • Additional/enhanced personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Alternative arrangements for face covering requirement

  • Documentation is required if you are requesting COVID related accommodations due to a mental or physical condition.

We will review and consider all pieces of documentation submitted. The following are recommendations for documentation to support COVID-related accommodation requests:

For high-risk conditions (as defined by the CDC):

Your documentation should confirm your diagnosis. If you have a condition that is only high-risk depending on the severity (e.g. moderate to severe asthma), the documentation should speak to the severity of your condition.

    For non-high-risk conditions:

Your documentation should confirm your diagnosis and address how your condition is affected by COVID-19. We encourage your health care provider to first review the university’s available accommodation options in order to determine what accommodations, if any, will be necessary.

Indicated below are the types of academic adjustments/accommodations in which you might be interested. This is not an indication of what may ultimately be determined as approved for you nor the full extent of option availalbe, but are merely suggestions of the types of accommodations that may have worked for you in the past and/or may be available to you at WVSU. • Academic Accommodations

  • Testing Accommodations

Testing accommodations are changes to the regular testing environment as well as aids and services a student may utilize during a test that allow students with disabilities to demonstrate their true aptitude or achievement level.

  • Alternative Text

Alternative Format Textbooks or Course Materials

Alternative text options are for those students with a print disability - a learning, physical or visual disability that prevents a person from reading or utilizing conventional print.

Even if you do not have a print disability, publishers typically provide various textbook formats for purchase.  Many digital textbooks are available through Redshelf (through the WVSU bookstore) or Vitalsource.

Access to Redshelf or Vitalsource do not need to be requested through this accommodation process.

    • Vitalsource - https://www.vitalsource.com/

  • Classroom Accommodations

Classroom accommodations may involve changes in the structures, physical environment as well as the way in which information is communicated or recorded within the classroom.  The accommodations are intended to help students with disabilities obtain the same information and have a similar experience as those of other students.

  • Accessible Media

Accessible Media allows students to read a text description of what is said in audiovisual materials (videos, podcasts, etc).  It is provided when a student is unable to utilize the auditory information due to a condition such as hearing impairment or certain learning disabilities.

    • Closed captions result from a process that involves dividing text into chucks and time-coding each frame to synchronize with the audio of a video. This allows viewers to follow along with the audio and video or captions interchangeably and in real-time with the content.
    • Transcription is the process in which speech or audio is converted into a written text document.

  • Computer Accessibility

WVSU is committed to providing equal access by creating an information and communication technology (ICT) environment that is accessible to all, including students with disabilities.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources are any electronic resources used for instruction, information distribution, or communication. ICT resources include, but are not limited to, software applications, computers, hardware systems, telecommunication products, and mobile devices.

  • Attendance/Class Participation, Test Dates or Deadline Flexibility

An accommodation in this area is usually considered when a qualified student experiences unpredictable exacerbations of severe adverse symptoms/effects of the student’s disability which may make it difficult to periodically meet the expectations of a particular course.

Neither a complete waiver of attendance nor blanket extensions for assignment deadlines or test dates are generally considered reasonable.  We have identifed both regular attendance in classes as well as timely completion of assignments as often being essential for the pace of the course, the understanding of the material as well as they are considered paramount to a student’s success in our courses.
